New Delhi: Imagine a time without the internet, television, smartphones, or processed and instant foods. People had to hunt and gather the food they would eat and obesity and diabetes were almost non-existent. This could be the reason the world is seeing a shift back to the diet of our ancestors from our diet of farmed crops-like grains and pulses to lose weight or simply improve their health.
A Paleo diet means to eat like our ancestors. Also referred to as the stone age diet, hunter-gatherer diet, or the caveman diet, paleo diet means consumption of food that might have been consumed in the Palaeolithic era which was about 10,000 years ago when people ate what they found by gathering and hunting. Food items like lean meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are popular for consumption when a person is on a Paleo diet. In fact, people are opting for this eating plan to boost their weight loss. 10 most searched diets on Google in 2018: Keto diet, Mediterranean, Noom and more meal plans for weight loss
Weight loss: Does a Paleo diet really work?
The reason Paleo diet is so popular is because of the belief that the human body is not genetically made to consume food that has emerged with the advent of farming. Farming has led to a diet made of grains and lentils, which was not how humans ate initially. The high rates of obesity, diabetes, and health issues are attributed to this shift.
Paleo diet is reported to lead to more weight loss in the same period of time as compared to a Mediterranean diet or the diabetes diet. Paleo diet also helps in managing the appetite better, improves glucose tolerance, and provides better blood pressure control. The diet eliminates any processed foods and high-calorie foods and thus aids weight loss and makes the body healthier and fitter. It also leads to increased consumption of fibre, as food is consumed in its raw and most natural form, which helps in digestion. It is recommended that for a paleo diet to work, one should exercise regularly and be active. Is the Paleo diet safe?
Though it is a good diet if you are trying to lose weight, it is not absolutely risk-free. Paleo diet is difficult to adopt in the long-term, as the food has to be eaten plain and can get really boring after a while. Plain food may also lead to a loss of nutrients, causing your body to be weak and undernourished. A Paleo diet is also expensive as organically grown food and lean meats can be more costly than regular food. It is important to note that there are no research-based evidences that the paleo diet works, all proofs of the diet being effective are anecdotal and thus the results may differ from body to body. Lean meats also contain saturated facts, that may not be the healthiest for people who suffer from obesity or overweight.
